What’s Best to Feed Your Cat?

With shelves full of options and labels like “grain-free,” “raw,” and “complete,” it’s easy to feel overwhelmed when it comes to feeding your cat. Here’s how to keep it simple and healthy.

The basics

Cats are obligate carnivores, meaning they need meat to thrive. Unlike dogs, they can’t be vegetarian or vegan.

A balanced diet should include:

  • High-quality protein (from animal sources)

  • Taurine (an essential amino acid for heart and vision)

  • The right balance of fats, vitamins and minerals

  • Moisture — cats often don’t drink enough water

Wet vs dry food – what’s better?

  • Wet food: Higher moisture content, often better for urinary health. Can help fussy eaters or senior cats.

  • Dry food: Convenient, longer shelf life, supports dental health (though not a replacement for dental care).

Many owners choose to feed a mix of wet and dry. What matters most is that the food is labelled as “complete” and suits your cat’s individual needs.

Special diets

Some cats benefit from:

  • Senior diets (7+ years)

  • Urinary or kidney support

  • Weight management foods

  • Diabetic or hypoallergenic formulas

Our vets and nurses can help you find the right food based on your cat’s age, health and lifestyle.
