Here at FAB we have an extensive orthopaedic kit which allows us to perform procedures such as cruciate & fracture repairs & hip laxations. We are very lucky to have Barbara who not only holds a surgery certificate but is also passionate about orthopaedics and will undertake many highly skilled procedures that many other practices have to refer. 

Common orthopaedic problems in pets

Orthopaedic conditions can affect pets at any age, whether they’re growing quickly, slowing down with age, or recovering from trauma. Common issues include:

  • Lameness or limping

  • Cruciate ligament injuries

  • Arthritis and joint stiffness

  • Hip or elbow dysplasia

  • Fractures or broken bones

  • Luxating patella (slipping kneecaps)

  • Joint instability or dislocations

  • Growth abnormalities in younger pets

Orthopaedics FAQ’s

  • Look out for:

    • Limping or favouring one leg

    • Reluctance to jump, run, or use stairs

    • Stiffness, especially after rest

    • Swelling around joints

    • Reduced activity or changes in posture

    • Yelping or reacting to touch

    • Difficulty getting up or lying down

  • Orthopaedic assessments usually include:

  • Not always, but it’s important to get any persistent limp checked out. It could be something simple, or an early sign of something more serious.

  • Arthritis can’t be cured, but it can be well managed with the right mix of medication, supplements, diet and exercise. We’ll help you create a plan that keeps your pet moving comfortably.

  • Not necessarily. Many orthopaedic issues can be managed without surgery, but if it is required, we’ll explain everything clearly and work with trusted referral partners if needed.

  • Many pets make excellent recoveries with rest, treatment, and rehabilitation. We’ll support you through every stage of your pet’s recovery.

  • Absolutely. Many older pets benefit from mobility support, pain management, and lifestyle changes to improve their comfort and independence.
