Dermatology FAQ’s

  • If you notice any of the following, it could be time to book a dermatology consultation:

    • Constant scratching or chewing at paws

    • Head shaking or repeated ear rubbing

    • Red, sore or inflamed skin

    • Bad-smelling ears or skin

    • Bald patches or excessive shedding

    • New lumps or unusual skin growths

    • Behaviour changes linked to discomfort

  • Every pet is different, so we start with a thorough exam and, where needed, further tests like:

    • Skin scrapes or swabs

    • Allergy testing

    • Blood work or diet trials

    • Ear examinations or cytology

Once we’ve found the cause, we’ll create a treatment plan that might include medicated washes, anti-itch medications, antibiotics, diet changes, or longer-term allergy management.

Our goal is to relieve the symptoms and stop the flare-ups from coming back.

  • Not always, scratching can be caused by parasites, infections, dry skin, or behavioural issues. We’ll investigate to find the real cause.

  • Yes, some pets develop allergies or intolerances to certain proteins or ingredients. We can help manage this through diet trials and nutrition advice.

  • It depends on the cause, some issues (like infections) can be cured, while others (like allergies) may need ongoing management. Either way, we’ll help your pet stay as comfortable as possible.

  • Regular flea treatment, a balanced diet, good grooming habits and early check-ups when symptoms appear can all help keep skin healthy.
