Diabetes in Dogs – What to Know, What to Watch For

Canine diabetes is a lifelong condition that affects how your dog’s body regulates blood sugar (glucose). It’s more common than you might think, particularly in middle-aged and older dogs and in most cases, it can be well-managed with the right care.

What causes diabetes in dogs?

Diabetes occurs when the body doesn’t produce enough insulin (Type I), or doesn’t respond to it properly (Type II – less common in dogs). This leads to elevated blood sugar levels, which can cause a range of health issues.

Risk factors include:

  • Age (typically 6+ years)

  • Obesity

  • Certain breeds (e.g. Dachshunds, Poodles, Samoyeds)

  • Pancreatitis

  • Hormonal conditions or long-term steroid use

Symptoms of diabetes in dogs

  • Increased thirst

  • Frequent urination

  • Weight loss despite a healthy appetite

  • Lethargy or weakness

  • Cloudy eyes or vision changes

  • Sweet-smelling breath
