Understanding Ear Problems in Dogs
Ear problems are incredibly common in dogs and often frustrating for both pet and owner. Knowing what to look for and how to treat ear issues early can help avoid long-term discomfort or complications.
Common causes of ear problems in dogs
Ear infections (Otitis externa)
Caused by bacteria or yeast, often made worse by moisture, wax, or allergies. Breeds with floppy ears (like spaniels) are particularly prone.Ear mites
Tiny parasites that cause intense itching and are more common in puppies or rescue dogs.Foreign objects
Grass seeds and other debris can get lodged in the ear canal, causing irritation and even infection.Allergies
Both food and environmental allergies can cause chronic inflammation and lead to ongoing ear trouble.Excessive hair or wax build-up
This can create the perfect environment for infection, especially in dogs with hairy ear canals.
Signs of ear problems to watch for
Scratching or pawing at ears
Head shaking or tilting
Redness, swelling or discharge
Bad-smelling ears
Sensitivity when ears are touched
Loss of balance or hearing (in severe cases)
What should you do?
Never try to clean your dog’s ears with cotton buds, you could damage the ear canal or push debris further in. If your dog is showing signs of discomfort, book a consultation. We’ll examine the ears thoroughly and can take swabs for analysis if needed.
Treatment may include medicated ear drops, cleaning solutions, or anti-inflammatories depending on the cause.
