Behaviours to Look Out For in a New Puppy

Puppies are learning machines, curious, playful, and constantly soaking up information. Understanding what’s normal (and what’s not) can help you support their development and catch early problems before they become habits.

Normal puppy behaviours

  • Chewing and mouthing – part of teething and exploration

  • Nipping during play – common but needs gentle redirection

  • Toilet accidents – expect a few early on

  • Separation whining – they’re adjusting to being alone

  • Zoomies! – short bursts of hyperactivity are totally normal

Behaviours to keep an eye on

  • Persistent fear or anxiety (e.g. hiding, shaking, not eating)

  • Excessive growling or biting, even in calm settings

  • Extreme reactivity to sounds, people or other dogs

  • Guarding food, toys or space early on

  • Lethargy or lack of interest in play

Many of these issues can be worked through with early socialisation, positive reinforcement, and routine, but it’s important to spot red flags early.

If you’re unsure whether your puppy’s behaviour is typical or something to be addressed, book in for a behavioural consult with one of our vets or nurses. We're always happy to help you build a strong start.
