Top Tips for Training a New Puppy

Training your puppy is one of the best investments you can make in their happiness and your sanity! The earlier you start with positive, consistent training, the more confident and well-behaved your dog will be as they grow.

Fab Vets’ Top Puppy Training Tips

1. Start with short sessions
Puppies have short attention spans. Keep training fun and brief, 5 minutes at a time is plenty to begin with.

2. Use positive reinforcement
Reward good behaviour with treats, praise or play. Avoid punishment, it confuses and scares young dogs.

3. Be consistent
Everyone in the household should use the same commands and rules. Mixed messages slow learning.

4. Socialise early (and safely)
Introduce your pup to different people, pets, places and sounds during their early development phase, ideally before 16 weeks.

5. Focus on key skills first
Toilet training, recall, sit, and loose-lead walking are great foundations. Don’t rush advanced tricks until basics are rock solid.

6. Stay patient
Every puppy learns at their own pace. Celebrate the small wins and don’t expect perfection overnight.
